Can I Take ED Medication If I Take Nitrates? No

September 2026·2 min read

No. ED medications such as sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil are not safe with nitrates, including nitroglycerin and some recreational poppers. Together they can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

What counts as a nitrate

Nitroglycerin tablets, sprays and patches, isosorbide medications, and amyl nitrite (poppers). If you are not sure whether a medication is a nitrate, ask your pharmacist.

What to do

List every medication in your intake. A clinician will not prescribe these ED medications if you take nitrates. Talk to your cardiologist or regular doctor about other options. If you have chest pain after taking an ED medication, call 911 and tell them what you took.
