To start a GLP-1 through VevaMD for the first time, you need a BMI of 25 or higher. If you already take a GLP-1, you can be considered to continue with a BMI above 20. In both cases you need to be an adult between 18 and 80, and a licensed clinician makes the final call.
Here is how BMI is calculated, what the numbers mean, and what else the clinician looks at.
What BMI do I need to start a GLP-1?
If you have never taken a GLP-1, the starting point is a BMI of 25 or higher. That rule comes from the Beluga Health network, whose licensed clinicians review every VevaMD assessment.
Meeting the number means you can be considered. It does not mean you will be prescribed. The clinician still reviews your full health history and decides what is appropriate for you.
There is also an age range: you need to be an adult between 18 and 80. If you are outside that range, a GLP-1 through VevaMD is not an option.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI, or body mass index, is a simple number based on your height and weight. There are two ways to figure it out:
- Metric: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared (height times height).
- US units: 703 times your weight in lb, divided by your height in inches squared.
Here is a worked example using round numbers. Say you are 1.8 meters tall and weigh 81 kilograms. First square your height: 1.8 times 1.8 is 3.24. Then divide your weight by that number: 81 divided by 3.24 is 25. Your BMI is 25, which meets the first-time threshold.
In US units the idea is the same. Multiply your weight in lb by 703, then divide by your height in inches times itself. Rounding to one decimal place is fine, and the clinician sees the height and weight you entered, not just the final number.
You do not need to do this yourself. The free online assessment asks for your height and weight and calculates your BMI for you.
What if I am already taking a GLP-1?
People who are already on a GLP-1 can be considered to continue with a BMI above 20.
Be ready to tell the clinician which medication you take, your current dose, and when you took your last one. If you are coming from a brand-name drug, read can I switch from a brand-name GLP-1? before you start.
What else does the clinician look at besides BMI?
BMI uses only height and weight, so it never tells the whole story. The clinician reviews your health history and current medications to decide whether a GLP-1 is a good fit. Some things can rule it out or need a closer look:
- Being pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive.
- A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2, which is a contraindication in the brand-name labeling.
- A history of pancreatitis or thyroid cancer.
- Other conditions the clinician screens for during review.

What if my BMI is just under the threshold?
Enter your real height and weight in the assessment. The thresholds are firm starting points, so if your BMI is under 25 and you have never taken a GLP-1, a GLP-1 through VevaMD is not an option for now. Your own doctor can talk with you about other paths. If you are unsure of your numbers, weigh and measure yourself before you start, since small differences in height change the number.
Do I need diabetes to qualify?
No. Diabetes is not required. Eligibility is based on your age, your BMI, and the clinician's review of your health history. Read more in do I need diabetes to get a GLP-1?
