BHRT, or bioidentical hormone therapy, uses hormones with the same chemical structure as the estrogen and progesterone your body makes. It is a type of menopause hormone therapy, and a licensed clinician decides whether any hormone therapy is right for you.
Bioidentical vs compounded
The terms often get mixed up. Many FDA-approved estradiol and progesterone products are bioidentical. Compounded hormones are made by a pharmacy for one person after a prescription. Compounded preparations, such as Bi-Est, are not FDA-approved, and being compounded does not make a hormone more natural or safer. See is compounded estradiol the same as brand.
Who considers hormone therapy?
Women with menopause or perimenopause symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, sleep problems or vaginal dryness often ask about it. Some health histories, such as blood clots, stroke or certain cancers, need careful review or rule it out.
